10th February, 2021 #day10
There were less violence than yesterday. Protesters cleverly avoided clashes with riot police and were seen controlling each other. As usual, young people are protesting in innovative ways. Meme cultures influence social media.
Unlike previous days, the General Administrative Department (GAD) and some police forces, which are the most important bodies of the local government, have been openly involved in protests. The elected NLD ministers have announced that government offices will be closed until the entire civilian government returns to power.
People are worried about Cyber Law that the junta is trying to enforce. If the law is passed, the government will have significant power to restrict the rights of individuals. In connection with this, some people protested in front of the Chinese embassy today after a report that stated Chinese IT professionals had arrived by plane to provide technical assistance to the junta. People are also urging each other not to use Chinese products.
The junta, for the first time, acknowledged the widespread protests on state-run media, and claimed that people were committing acts of violence. The military broke into the NLD central office in Yangon last night and confiscated documents and bank records. Some believe the break-in was to find an evidence about foreign funding and to declare the NLD an illegal party. Due to international pressure, Lim Kaline has announced that he will withdraw its stake in Virginia Tobacco Company and cut his business ties with the military. Among the international community, the New Zealand will be the first to cut off all diplomatic relations with the Myanmar junta.
The unfortunate news is that the girl who was shot in the head yesterday in Naypyitaw has only a small chance to survive, according to her family. Protesters across the country have been praying for her recovery.
Rumors include the junta storming the Telenor office, the junta sending prisoners to incite violence at protest sites, and soldiers dressing in police uniforms to crackdown the protests.
