13th February, 2021 #day13

News of police arrests at midnight has been terrifying people. Because of rumors, residents and neighbors in Yangon took to the streets at midnight to protect the leaders of the protest. In some places, the police were stopped before the arrest but in some places, there was no troops nor arrest. To date, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) AAPP, 326 people have been arrested and 303 remain in detention.

More than 20,000 prisoners were released on amnesty yesterday and rumors of them being in the neighborhood to create riots and arson attacks have raised public fears. Reports of prisoners leading the destruction of properties and violent crackdowns during the 1988 and 2007 mass demonstrations raised public concern. Therefore, locals are urging each other to bang pots and pans when the police come to arrest or when they see the strangers in the neighborhood at midnight.

The Biden administration issued an executive order two days ago targeting coup leaders. It has said that sanctions will not harm ordinary people. People are more interested in the words - "unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States" mentioned in the order. Some claim that the United States could take military action against the junta or a US-China proxy war could erupt in Myanmar, but some argue that it is just a legal term, and therefore there will be no more than economic sanctions.

The junta has issued arrest warrants for seven prominent protest leaders including Min Ko Naing, Jimmy, and Linn Linn under Section 505 (b) for violating public order and stability. In addition, the junta is making amendments to the existing laws and regulations. Due to these changes, every household have to notify the ward office if a guest(s) is staying overnight. In addition, arrest can now be made without warrants or judge’s order. In some ethnic areas, protesters were provided with security by ethnic armed groups. In some parts of Yangon, the locals has declared self-government in their suburbs and committed to defend the security forces who come to arrest the protesters.
