People's Defense Forces from 13 townships of Magwe Region formed the Magwe Region Army (MDA) on 24 July 24. A member of the group told Myanmar Now that it was set up as a precautionary measure against the junta’s violence, as in other regions.
The first clash between the CDF (Matupi) and the junta troops took place on the Mindat-Matupi road in Chin State on 24 July, killing one member of the CDF, the Chin World Media reported. A total of nine junta troops, including a Pyu Saw Htee member and a Manipur militant, were killed and several others were injured in a clash between the Tamu security forces (TSG) and the junta troops council near Tamu on 24 July, according to the statement of the TSG.
In Taungdwingyi, Magway Region, one of the victims told Khit Thit Media that those who went out for health issues at night were beaten by the junta troops. The junta has issued a curfew from 8 pm to 4 am, causing difficulties for people in need of emergency assistance due to the Covid outbreak.
A prison official has denied torturing inmates in the Insein Prison after the protest, according to the Burma Associated Press. However, a source close to the prison told VOA that seven female inmates were killed in the women's detention ward on 23 July after being beaten by the junta troops.
According to a statement from the Yangon University Students' Union, protest leaders, including Ko Aye Aung, Ko Naing Zaw, and Ko Lapyay Soe Moe, have been placed in isolation. Shwe Phee Myay News Agency also reported that inmates in Mandalay's Obo Prison were served only a bowl of rice soup for a day as punishment.
The European Commission has announced that it has mobilized 2 million Euro for Myanmar in response to the latest outbreak. The aid will be delivered through “trusted and independent humanitarian organizations”, the statement said.
