On 7 September, 219 days after the coup, National Unity Government Acting President Duwa Lashi La declared a state of emergency across the country, calling the people to lunch “defensive revolution” against the military junta in every corner of the county. He said in a seven-minute speech that the state of emergency will last till the people's government could be restored and believe the international community would understand the situation. He urged the PDFs to strictly follow the instructions and military codes.

The announcement was welcomed by People’s Defence Forces across the country and by several ethnic armed forces. The NUG's Ministry of Defence issued a seven-point rules on the battlefield for the PDFs and their respective commanders.

A spokesperson of the junta told the BBC that D-Day was announced as the UN General Assembly approaches. He said the NUG is destabilizing the country and that the military could provide protection and security for the people. Immediately after the announcement, the junta’s fighter jets and helicopters took off, and security was tightened in the cities, according to media reports. According to a leaked confidential letter of the junta, all troops must be ready within half an hour if ordered to do so.

According to Mizziam, clashes broke out between the junta troops and the joint forces between the local PDF and the Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade 4 in Palaw and Thayetchaung Townships in Tanintharyi Region. According to Kachinwaves, fighting also took place between the junta troops and the KIA Brigade 8 and 9 in Homalin Township, Sagaing Region.

The KNDF Battalion 19 has announced that coalition of local resistance forces are now attacking the police station in Demoso Township, Karenni State from 6 pm tonight. According to the Kantarawaddy Times, fighting has intensified, and power has been cut off in the town. Similarly, gunfire was heard in Hakha, Chin State, at around 8 pm tonight, locals wrote on social media.

The Irrawaddy reports that 11 armed junta-owned Mytel telecommunication towers in Sagaing Region were simultaneously destroyed by an unknown armed group. Beikthano PDF reports that five military targets in four towns in Magway Region were bombed. Gold and dollar prices hit record highs in Yangon after the state of emergency was declared, according to VOA.

The military council has arrested Brigadier General Thant Zin Oo of the Sagaing’s Kalay Regional Command and Brigadier General Tun Naing Oo of the Regional Command in Loikaw, Karenni State. Thant Zan Oo may be prosecuted for the massacre of more than 40 people in Kani Township, according to DVB. Wirathu, a religious extremist charged under Section 124-A of the Penal Code, was released on 6 September, according to Myanmar Now.
