Fighting has been raging between the junta troops and the coalition forces near Loikaw, the capital of Karenni (Kayah) State, since 7 January. The Karenni National Defense Force (KNDF) claimed that more than 30 junta troops were killed and a tank and a helicopter were destroyed on 8 January. Artillery shelling by the junta killed at least six locals and displaced more than 20,000 people in Loikaw, with some trapped inside the town, local media reported.
According to Shwe Phee Myay, the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) soldiers raided some places in Namkham town, northern Shan State, killing at least four junta troops. Six locals, including a two-year-old boy, were also injured during the clash. The KNU Brigade 5 announced on 6 January that three junta troops had surrendered to them with weapons. 47 junta troops had reportedly surrendered to the KNU Brigade 5 since the coup.
From 5 to 8 January, at least four junta troops were killed and many others were injured in a series of attacks in nine Yangon townships carried out by the NUG’s Yangon Regional command. Khit Thit said that the junta conducted multiple airstrikes with three helicopter gunships at U Nouk village, Pale Township, Sagaing region, where the famous local defence force leader Bo Naga was believed to be.
The BBC reports that the number of stillbirths is on the rise in IDP camps around Kale, Sagaing Region, due to malnutrition. In Matupi Township, southern Chin State, the junta troops killed nine locals after using them as human shields, according to Chin State-based media. Among the dead were a 13-year-old boy and Pu Tuidim, founder of Khonumthung Media, based in Chin State.
People's Spring reports that LNG (liquefied natural gas) power plants, which were implemented under a civilian government, will be shut down as the junta is unable to pay companies, reducing power generation by 18 percent. During a meeting with the Cambodian prime minister, the coup leader said he was considering extending the unilateral ceasefire until the end of 2022.
